Debbie Elder is an internationally recognized innovator, best-selling author and leader in motivating students to peak performance. Debbie’s long and varied experiences with young people have equipped her to successfully work with all children under any circumstances. Debbie managed the disciplinary unit of the Calgary Young Offender Center early in her career, for the rehabilitation of juvenile males who had committed serious crimes. Her passion for and success in working with troubled youth continued as a therapeutic foster parent, where she cared for teenage girls with severe behavior issues. In 1993, Debbie was named Therapeutic Foster Parent of the Year .
After moving to Houston, Texas in 1995, Debbie worked as a substitute teacher at a local elementary school and spent two years teaching Pre-K. In 2003, Debbie joined the Appelbaum Training Institute and traveled the country teaching behavior management techniques for the classroom. Debbie enjoyed her speaking engagements, where she was able to interact with 800 – 1,200 teachers every week.
In 2000 Debbie developed and managed a unique after school program for students in grades 3-12. The program empowered children of all ages to take ownership of their schoolwork, develop success strategies, and increase their level of self-awareness. Following on the tremendous success of the program and at the request of many clients, Debbie opened a private school for students in grades 6-12. The school focused on teaching to the whole child] using accelerated learning methods coupled with the same success strategies used by the top producers in corporate America . The program was so well received that Debbie opened 14 additional schools across the country,
In 2013, a parent of one of Debbie’s former students strongly recommended that she return to the after-school program. He attested to the profound effect the program had had on his family. He shared with Debbie that prior to her program, he felt like the ‘Homework Police’ and spent way too much time and (negative) energy badgering his son to finish his daily assignments. But, when his son had the opportunity to attend Set Them Up For Success all of that changed. His son came home feeling successful and satisfied with the progress he had made, and felt relieved that his homework was complete. He and his father enjoyed evenings together without any stress or bickering. Family harmony was restored.
Debbie has also worked as a consultant to families planning for college. In this role, Debbie utilized a unique process to help parents afford college and ensured that the students were prepared for admission to their desired Universities, and ready to complete the curriculum in a timely fashion.
